Keine Ölbohrungen in Virunga! Studie zeigt enormes wirtschaftliches Potential - ohne Ölförderung.

Bis hierher und nicht weiter. Seit vielen Monaten versuchen wir den Virunga Nationalpark zu schützen. Er ist der älteste Nationalpark Afrikas und ein UNESCO Weltnaturerbe. Nicht ohne Grund. Kein Ort auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent hat eine vergleichbare biologische und landschaftliche Vielfalt. Bergland- und Flachlandgorillas leben hier, genauso wie Schimpansen, Elefanten, Nilpferde, Okapi, unzählige Schmetterlinge, Chamäleons und über 2.000 Pflanzenarten. 

Doch der Nationalpark ist nicht nur eine Schatzkammer für die Natur. Auch die Ölindustrie vermutet hier einen ganz anderen Schatz: Erdöl. Um wirklich sicher zu gehen, ob und wie viel Erdöl sich in Virunga vorhanden ist, bereitet die Ölindustrie gerade Erkundungsbohrungen vor. Diese ersten Erkundungsbohrungen sind eine neue Bedrohung für Virunga – einem Nationalpark, der schon seit Jahren durch Bürgerkriege, Wilderer und illegale Holzfäller bedroht wird. Doch die Suche nach Öl könnte folgenschwerer sein, als alle vorangegangen Bedrohungen. Sie gefährdet die Zukunft des gesamten Parks, der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt und der Menschen, die hier leben.

Konkret hat britische Erdölfirma Soco angekündigt, „wissenschaftliche“ Probebohrungen innerhalb des UNESCO-Welterbegebietes Virunga durchzuführen. Das müssen wir verhindern! Sollte die Ölindustrie einen Fuß in den Park bekommen, wären die Folgen fatal: Zerstörung, Verschmutzung, Verstärkung von Krisen und letztliche noch mehr Instabilität in einer schon jetzt krisengebeutelten Region.
Natürlich begründen Soco und die kongolesische Regierung die Ölbohrungen mit wirtschaftlichen Wachstum. Aber das ist viel zu kurz gedacht! Heute haben wir weltweit eine Studie veröffentlicht, welche das unglaubliche Potential von Virunga abbildet, wenn das Weltnaturerbe weiterhin geschützt wird.

1,1 Milliarden (!) US Dollar könnten pro Jahr (!) im Virunga erwirtschaftet werden, wenn der Nationalpark nachhaltig betrieben wird und das Ökosystem intakt bleibt. Die potentielle Wertschöpfung von 411 Millionen US Dollar aus Tourismus, Fischerei, Wasserkraft, Pharmakologie, Forschung, Walderhaltung, Wasserversorgung und Erosionsschutz sind gewaltig. Und sie haben das Potential 45.000 Jobs zu schaffen – vor allem auch für die einheimische Bevölkerung.

Mit viel Druck konnten wir von ein paar Wochen dem französischen Ölkonzern TOTAL das Versprechen abringen, seine Ölbohrpläne in Virunga fallen zu lassen. Soco verharrt bisher auf seiner Position und will von seinen Plänen nicht Abstand nehmen.

Aber Ölbohrungen in einem Nationalpark sind eine rote Linie, die nicht überschritten werden darf! Bis hierher und nicht weiter. Darum haben wir heute offiziell in einer weltweiten Aktion des WWF die SOS Virunga Kampagne gestartet. Wir können es nicht zulassen, dass ein so unglaublicher Ort wie Virunga durch die Gier der Ölindustrie zerstört wird!

  2. This is very sad indeed. I recently visited both Virunga and the Kahuzi Biega National Park and what a holiday. Pristine wilderness and amazing landscape. I hope the Congolese people and Park authorities realize the importance these parks for posterity because oil is slowly losing its value.
